From Serra d’Ossa to Rosé: The Story Behind Hossio

From Serra d’Ossa to Rosé: The Story Behind Hossio - Hossio Wines | Boutique Portuguese Rosé | Serra d’Ossa Alentejo

A beginning shaped by place

Our story begins in the Serra d’Ossa, in the heart of the Alentejo.

When we first arrived at the vineyard, the landscape was simple but full of promise. Old olive trees stood alongside a handful of fruit trees, quietly rooted in a terrain that had been shaped over time. It was not a finished project, but that was precisely the point. What we saw was potential.

From the outset, we believed that great wine is not the result of a single decision, but of many thoughtful ones, made consistently and with care.

Building a living ecosystem

One of our first priorities was to look beyond the vine itself.

We began expanding and diversifying the ecosystem around it, planting new fruit trees and Mediterranean species to bring balance back to the land. This was not simply about appearance or variety. It was about creating a living environment where each element plays a role.

Over time, the soil began to change. It became more alive, better able to retain water and nutrients, and more resilient to the natural challenges of the region.

This transformation has a direct impact on the wine.

A healthier soil supports healthier vines, and that is reflected in the freshness, structure and character of what we produce. The presence of different plant life contributes subtly but meaningfully, influencing aromas, flavours and even texture.

Nothing exists in isolation.

Restoring the vineyard with intent

Serra d’Ossa vineyard in Alentejo, Portugal, where Hossio rosé is grown

Alongside the work in the vineyard, we undertook the restoration of the agricultural buildings and surrounding spaces.

This was not without its challenges. It required patience, practical thinking and, at times, a willingness to adapt. Each decision needed to respect both the history of the place and the direction we wanted to take it.

Sustainability has been central to this process.

We introduced rainwater collection systems and drip irrigation to ensure that water is used carefully and efficiently. These are not just technical improvements. They are part of a broader commitment to working with the land rather than imposing upon it.

There were moments where progress felt slow, but each step reinforced our connection to the vineyard and to the community around it.

Our first expression: Hossio Rosé 2024

The release of Hossio Rosé 2024 marks the first chapter of this journey.

It is more than a product. It is a reflection of the decisions made in the vineyard, the condition of the soil, and the philosophy that guides us. The aim has always been to produce wines that express authenticity and a clear sense of place.

This rosé is the starting point of a range we intend to develop over time, with the same attention to detail and respect for natural balance.

There is no rush. Each release will follow its own rhythm.

Sharing the journey: Tabernas in Redondo

Visitors gathering at the Tabernas event in Redondo

Recently, we had the opportunity to take part in the Tabernas event in Redondo, organised by the local tourism initiative.

It was a significant moment for us.

The response exceeded expectations, with the event selling out quickly and a second date being added. More importantly, it allowed us to share our wine and our story with people who value the same things we do.

Meeting visitors, exchanging conversations and seeing genuine interest in what we are building reinforced that this project extends beyond the vineyard itself. It is part of a wider community.

Looking ahead

What we are building at Hossio is still in its early stages.

There is more to plant, more to refine and more to learn. Each season will bring its own challenges and its own progress.

For those following from the beginning, this is only the start.

Thank you for being part of it

We are grateful to share this journey with you.

The best is still ahead.
